Luscious, Loose, and Lovely Curls!
By Lance Christopher

Straightened hair is out. Meg Ryan straight hair with those flicky flips is out. Flat hair is out. Not only is straightened hair out, it costs a lot of money. A Japanese straightener can cost upwards of $700. Even for those of you who cannot afford that type of service, straightening hair can be very time-consuming. Straightening your hair every single day is boring. The process takes up a lot of valuable time that can be spent doing more important things. Now, I'm not saying your hair is not important. Of course it is! It's not that important, however, if you are busy rockin' an old hair style.
Fortunately, creating texture and body for your hair is in. The Hollywood glamour girl look is back! You can see these loose curls on celebrities like all the Jessicas—Simpson, Alba, and Sarah Jessica Parker. Oh, let's not forget The OC star Rachel Bilson, who in spite of not being a Jessica is now famous for those bountiful curls. More and more of your favorite female celebrities are being seen wearing the long loose curls. You would have to ask these celebrities personally (good luck on that one) how they accomplish this beautiful look because there are two amazing ways to get the look.
The first way you can achieve this modern look is with a permanent solution. To achieve the natural beauty of the modern perm, you must follow a specific technique. You will be utilizing the two largest-sized perm rods. Normally, the color of the rod corresponds with the size of the rod. The two largest sized rods in the hair industry are orange/peach colored rods. I also recommend the extra long purple rods called "Super Rollers". They are easy to use, very flexible, perfect for perming, and will not absorb any type of perm solution. You can pick up any of these rods at a Sally Beauty Supply, which are located all over the United States.
Take a rod and wind a section of hair around it in a spiral fashion, beginning at the tips of the hair. Don't wind all the way—stop approximately two inches from the roots of your hair. Alternate the two rod sizes next to each other, creating interest and fullness in your hair style. Let the rods hang vertically for that cool curl look.
As for the permanent solution itself, find one that is appropriate for you by hair type. Don't buy a brand if they don't have one for your hair type—virgin hair or colored, bleached, fine or thick, and so on. Then, follow the directions on the box to the T when preparing it and applying it to the rods.
I don't recommend that you do this yourself, unless you're very talented with your hands and can follow directions well. Even a friend who is good with his or her hands could do this for you. Better still, show this article to your hairdresser, who should understand right away what we're talking about.
Don't fret! This is not the same type of perm that you remember from the 1980s. In the 80s, there was only one type of perm. This perm was a hard core chemical treatment. Women were damaging their hair with primitive chemicals. Some of these women were frying their hair over and over again. In today's era of healthy living, perms are more natural and gentle on your scalp, but more importantly for your hair. Perm solutions these days include less ammonia and more softer ingredients. The Lance Christopher Salon currently uses Wella brand perm solution, which is also used by many salons across the U.S.
In addition to getting a permanent solution, you can also achieve this great look by simply styling your hair. Curling irons and round brushes are normally the easiest tools used to attain this modern look. Again, specific techniques are used by stylists to perfect your hair, and they are professionally trained to do so.
Today, there are many different types of perms for different types of hair. Ask your local salon about a perm that could work for you! If you are not interested in permanently perming your hair, but still want to reflect the Hollywood style for a special night on the town, you can ask your local stylist for a style to achieve this look. Explain to him/her that you want long loose curls, and they will know exactly that you are going for. Winter Hair Trends

Winter Hair Trends

There's a slight chill in the air and the sun is setting a tad earlier, which means it's time to wave buh-bye to long summer nights and the messy, effortless hair we embraced during the hot, hot months. We in Southern California, for lack of seasons, might be able to pull off wearing pieces of our summer wardrobe clear into Halloween, but that's just to cope with the So-Cal heat. What about our summer hair?! To those who fall on the hip side of L.A., the end of summer means it's time to ditch your summer 'do.

So what do you do with the beach-blonde locks and the grown-out tresses you spent all summer trying to achieve? Leave that look at the beach—it'll be there waiting for you in the Spring. For now, Logan—hair trend guru, hair stylist and color expert for the Lance Christopher Salon in Beverly Hills—lays down the hair law and gives some much needed advice on transitioning into the fall.

Color

Block coloring with subtle highlights is in. Colors should be multi-dimensional—they should blend with each other, not be streaky or bleached-looking. Use more than one color, within a few shades of each other—the colors should co-exist without having to fight for attention.

Coloring should be done to your whole head—partials are out. The old inland trend of platinum on the top and dark in the under layers is, as Logan puts it, "Beauty school hair—if it looks like it was done at hair school, keep it there."

Girls with darker hair, and who want to keep it, should weave in darker colors within a shade or two of each other for the multi-dimensional look. Flat hair color is out, but was it ever really in?

Logan's pick as hair color winner among celebrities is Mariah Carey. "Mariah, as trashy as she is, still looks classy by choosing color tones that are within three levels of each other."

Curls, Curls, Curls—They're Back!

Long, loose waves by day and bouncy, flowing curls by night is the trend of the summer that is being taken into the fall—why? Because it looks so good. Girls should choose to have wavier hair than curly, and this fall it's all about the body wave.

Hair permanents are back. If you can conquer your perm fear and put your "home perm done by yo' mama back in the day" looks far behind you, then you might just want consider getting a perm. Modern science and a slew of chemists have granted us the gift of waves that give to the hair and do not take away. The chemicals contain more conditioning ingredients and are far less damaging.

If you want both wavy and straight hair, you might still want to consider getting a perm. It's easier and far less damaging to go from wavy/curly hair to straight hair than vice versa—no matter what they say. Reasons being: you use less product and there's little damage, while straight to curly girls use more product for a curl that might not last through the night.

Logan's celebrity picks for curly hair: Jessica Simpson, Terry Hatcher, and Amy Brenneman.

"Stay away from the 80s 'Sarah Jessica Parker' curly home perm. Get it done professionally."

Bangs

There are so many cute ways to wear bangs, and they look good on just about everyone; so, according to Logan, here are the bangs you should stay away from.

Early 90s "Jennifer Aniston" bangs. These are bangs that frame your face equally on both sides. It's an outdated cut that looked great when Jennifer had them. Let your mom have this look.

Baby-doll, straight-edge bangs¬. These are the bangs that are cut straight across your forehead. Some girls curl them under, some wear them straight and flat; but if you're older than 14 and younger than 80, you should lose the look. The only girls they look good on are theme girls. That means goth girls or indie girls. Everyone else need not apply.

Boy bangs. The name says it all. If you have bangs that look like they came straight from a boy band style guide, ditch them fast.

Bang girls should navigate toward:

Come-kiss-me bangs (long bangs). These are the bangs that curve to your lip. They're long bangs worn with side parts and they point right to your kisser to accentuate your lips. It's a good transitional look if you're growing out your bangs and waiting for that bang-less look.

Come-hither bangs (Medium bangs). These bangs are side-swept and cover part of the eye. Celebs like Nicole Richie and Ashlee Simpson have been sporting these bangs lately. With this look, "you can get the guy from across the bar to come over to you without actually having to look at him," asserts Logan.

Fierce-and-you-know-it bangs (short bangs). These bangs are shorter than the previous two and a little more diagonal, and can still be worn side-swept or fully down. This look is for girls who love bangs and who know they look good with them. Celebs who have dared to wear this look include Missy Elliot and Jessica Simpson.

Long Hair

Girls with long hair have often opted for the choppy notice-my-layers cut. That's not going to work for the fall. Layers should be long and almost invisible. This should be the cut that says, "now you see me, now you don't." These layers should be blend-able and should only stand out if you want them to, not because they have nowhere else to go. Logan's pick among long-layered celebrities is Lindsay Lohan.

Centered Looks

Transition is the theme for the season and the cut and color must comply. Hair that is drastic or complicated is just not going to work, but neither is dull, boring hair. The key to looking good this season is to be centered about your look. Not too dark, not too light. Shiny, not greasy; and if you're completely at a loss, find pics of your favorite celebrity hair and always consult your stylist.

Celebrity hair looks how to get them

Luxury for Less

Get Highlights Like Gisele

Gisele’s highlights are usually a two-step process, depending on your original hair color. If you have dark to medium hair, you want to lighten your base color first by one to two levels basically to soften the brown. Ask your stylist what your hair color level is. The key is actually to soften the base color—you want to go softer, not lighter. If you lighten your base color too much, you'll end up looking brassy, and that never looks good.

For the highlights, ask your stylist to add golden highlights of medium thickness to the top front half of your head. You don't want the highlights to be either chunky or fine. My view is that they look best on the top of your head because you want to look sun-kissed and natural. The highlights are there to add shine and subtle contrast, not to stand out.

If the highlights come out too brassy or red, don’t worry—that’s easily fixed with a toner, preferably one that is a light golden-blonde color. This will even up the highlights.

All-Over Color Like Jules Asner

Rich brown is always a winner. Of course, there are different levels, so explore with your stylist what you consider to be “rich.” This depends primarily on your skin color. You don't want to match your skin color, or you could look jaundiced.

If you have red in your skin, watch out for those brown colors that have red tones. If you have pale or whiter skin, ask for a deep brown with warm auburn tones. The point is to warm up your look.

If your hair is light, ask for a little gold on your ends. Often when you go from light to dark, the ends of the hair go ash. You don't want that, so ask your stylist to add a lightening, golden brown touch on the ends. If your hair is already dark, you might want to consider adding richer, darker lowlights throughout your hair. This will add depth.

If you want your newly rich-brown hair to pop with shine and feel like silk, I recommend a color gloss like a cellophane at the end of the process.

Extensions Like Nicole Richie

Extensions add hair to your head, so do something special. They can always come off if you change your mind. If you have the option, buy your hair with your hairdresser present. This is far better than the hairdresser taking a swatch of your hair and buying it without you present, or conversely sending you off with instructions on how to buy your hair. When both of you are present, you can better explore all the hair texture and color possibilities that make sense for you. You can take advantage of your hairdresser’s expertise, and your hairdresser can view your entire situation intelligently with you present.

If you want a full head of extensions, get extensions that match your hair color. If you want to add a little depth or funk it up a bit, pick contrasting colors or bright colors. For brighter colors, you only need to add a few pieces toward the front of your head.

Ask yourself what effect you're going for and tell your stylist. Do you want extensions all over, or just a few accents? I always say it’s safe to stick with colors found in nature, but fashion colors are the latest. Fashion colors are natural colors taken a step further to become edgy and wild. Don’t go as far as bright greens, which are clown colors. Think reds, blue-blacks, or purple-browns that are not too far from brown. Nicole chose yellow accents, and you can see how that works for her. Choose colors that will look good with your skin and hair. Remember—it's not permanent, so have a little fun.

Blowout Like Cindy Crawford

The key to achieving this hair style lies first in the round brush and then in the technique. Try to stay away from a thermal round brush, which will hold the heat too much and end up curling your hair and giving you an old-fashioned flip. What you want to invest in is two round brushes, one with bristles three inches in diameter and another of two inches. The bristles should be boar’s hair and soft. The softer bristles grip your hair better and will allow you to pull and stretch your hair, which will smooth out your hair and add shine. You might also want to consider purchasing a 2000-watt blowdryer. This is a powerful one and will dry your hair faster.

Shampoo and condition your hair first. Towel-dry and then put a little detangler or leave-in conditioner in your hair. Just a dime-sized amount, maybe a quarter if you have a lot of hair. You can add a little straightener product instead of or in addition to the conditioner, but be careful. You don't want to weigh your hair down with product. I find that using cream products instead of gel products is better because the gel is heavier and will slow the drying process. The cream actually protects your hair from the heat better and the results are often smoother.

Ah, the technique. Here goes. Blowdry your hair about 90% dry. Then, start with the bangs. Always start with the bangs; because if you let them dry first before styling, you'll have a tough time getting them to do what you want. Use the two-inch brush for the bangs and lift bangs straight up. As you roll your hair around the brush, roll down. Blowdry along the entire length of the bangs as you do so.

When you’re done with the bangs, proceed with the rest of your hair. Grab about a two-inch section of hair at the side of your head, keeping the hair next to it out of your way by using a pointed nose clip. Roll it around the brush, then heat it up by move the drier back and forth over the brush for 20 seconds. Keep the drier moving constantly. Put the drier down, unroll the hair from the brush, brush out the section a bit, then repeat the process two or three or three times per section by rolling it up again from the ends of the hair up to the roots and blowdrying the hair around the brush again.

Do this around your entire head, but don't worry too much about the back because it'll be harder to reach than the tops and sides.

Lastly, run a comb though your hair with the dryer to smooth out your hair all over. Finish with a waxy or soft pomade or smoothing serum by emulsifying the product in your palms. Put product in your hair by raking through with fingertips, not the palm of your hand. Pull at the ends or your hair to break it up a little bit, give your head a shake, and you look like Cindy Crawford.

Kirsten Dunst Haircut

You'll want to ask for a shaggy bob that's round layered and has lots of movement. Find the length that compliments your face shape. Do you want shoulder length or up to your chin. Consider your neck, is it long? Thick? Keep this in mind when going shorter. Do it right, you don't want to look to heavy on the bottom. Ask your stylist for layers on the top and bottom of your hair. Often times, layers are added to the top and front of your hair, and then you have a cut that's more blunt and has less movement. Break up the bottom with texture scissors. Don't over do it or your cut will get flippy at the ends. For bangs, decide on if you want a long sweepy bang or go a little shorter. Keep in mind what looks best on you and not the celebrity.

Color with Highlights Like Jennifer Aniston

This look depends on the darkness of your hair, are you a soft brown or a dark brown? This will depend on if you're going to get highlights or lowlights, or maybe a little bit of both. You basically want the light to show a little glimpse of contrast. If you have medium brown hair, you want very subtle golden brown lowlights. The lowlights should be 1 level lighter than the base, and keep them golden. You don't want to look ashy or smokey. As long as there's gold in the lowlight, you'll look good. Concentrate on the ends of the hair, it'll look more natural and thin out the neck with the darker toned unders of your hair. Ask for a light golden cellophane to make your hair shiney and silky and the lowlights and highlights will blend better. Jennifer's look is very natural looking and subtle. She just has a few hints of shine not all-over highlights. Jennifer had a 1 process highlights and lowlights because she's a light/soft brunette.

Valentines Day hair
From: Lance Christopher
2/14/2009 12:44:14 PM

Do you want a mysterious, seductive, and beautiful look this Valentine's Day? If so, keep reading. The 14th day of February is a day that all women look forward to. It is the only day of the year when your significant other is supposed to buy you flowers, candy, or even a teddy bear. This year, make Valentine's day about you, your look, and getting what you want. Most importantly, make Valentine's Day about making an everlasting, but ruthless impression on your man…with your hair.
If you don't already have bangs, get some; bangs bring attention to the eyes. What type of bangs? Whispy, soft, feathery bangs are the way to go. Bangs that partially cover one eye create mystery and leave men with a sense of uncertainty. So why not create this fantasy by bangin' some bangs! Have your bangs cut at a slight angle so that they point to your eyes…like cupid aiming his arrow. With your bangs bringing this much attention to your eyes, you'll be more than just "eye candy" to your man.
While bangs may create mystery and intrigue, the color of your hair can make you look fierce. Suttle strawberry blonde highlights are the perfect compliment to any hair color. These highlights lighten up brown or black hair, and add dimension to blonde hair.
A great way to add shine to your already flawless hair would be a semi permanent color gloss, or cellophane. This hair treatment smoothes down the cuticle layer of your hair. Cellophane makes your hair look shiny and healthy, without damaging your hair.

The perfect Valentine's Day hair would include bangs, color, and shine! Of course, any combination of the three Valentine's Day hair necessities would suffice. Any way you treat your hair this Valentine's Day, whether with bangs, color, or shine, you'll have your man wanting to kiss your hair…and not your lips.

Bouncy, full body, falling on shoulder
Something to grab onto

Make him want to kiss your hair and not your lips.
Graceful shine
Unknowingly/unknowing
